MYKONOES GREECE guide of Mykonoes island

Date:

Mykonoes, despite its small 34-square-mile area, attract a lot of attention in terms of Greek tourism. It is one of the most popular islands in the world, with over 500,000 tourists visiting each year. Mykonoes is also known as the “Manhattan of the Aegean” and offers stunning beaches, top-class entertainment, fashionable shopping, access to ancient history, and an amazing opportunity for adventure and fun. Mykonoes offers something for everyone, from sunset drag shows to guided tours of ancient ruin sites. We offer a brief guide to mykonoes.

Greek Mythology Mykonoes

Mykonoes is the site of an ancient battle between the Giants, children of Gaia, the earth goddess, and the Olympian gods. Hercules, the hero, lured the Giants out of hiding and defeated them on mykonoes. Legend has it that giant rock formations found on mykonoes may be petrified bodies of mythological Giants.

History of Mykonoes

Mykonoes favorable geographical location has made it an important stopover for merchant ships throughout history. Unintentionally, this trade route led to the open-mindedness of the island’s inhabitants. This trait is still evident today.

Under Ottoman and Venetians Ruler

Mykonoes were under the control of the Romans during their reign of the great Roman Empire. It then became part of the Byzantine Empire up to the 12th century. Andrea Ghisi, a relative to the Doge from Venice, took mykonoes in 1204, following the fall of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade. At the end of the 13th century, the island was destroyed by the Catalans and finally handed over to direct Venetian control in 1390.

While the Venetians ruled, mykonoes were under attack by Hayreddin Barbarossa (the infamous admiral Suleiman the Magnificent), and an Ottoman fleet set up camp on the island. Kapudan Pasha, the Ottomans, established a system for self-governance that included a governor and a council of syndics. The last Venetians departed the region after the Ottomans took the castle at Tino’s.

In 1821, the Greek Revolution against the Ottoman Empire broke forth. Mykonoes was a key player, with Manto Mavrogenous, the national hero, playing a significant role. Mavrogenous was a wealthy aristocrat who believed in the Enlightenment and sacrificed her fortune to support the Greek cause. In 1830, Greece was an independent country. In the center of Mando Mavrogenous Square in the main city, is a statue of her.

Mykonoes history as a tourist destination began 100 years later. Mykonoes started to attract tourists in the 1920s when archeologists, history buffs, and others used the island as a base for visiting Delos, the sacred island. Delos, located six nautical miles away from mykonoes is the only home to a vast archeological site. Because it does not offer overnight accommodation, mykonoes became its base camp.

Today’s Condition of Mykonoes

The island’s merchant and sailing activity helped to boost its economy. However, it declined once again in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was especially after the opening of the Corinth Canal in 1904 as well as the First World War at the beginning of the 21st century. Many Mykonians fled the island in search of work in mainland Greece, and other countries, including the United States. In the 1960s, tourism became more popular when Jackie Kennedy Onassis (Jackie O), former first lady of the United States, visited the island along with her husband Aristotle Onassis, a wealthy businessman. The island was then visited by Grace Kelly and Brigitte Barrot. By the 1970s, it had become a popular destination for celebrities as well as the super-wealthy.

Today’s party culture includes celebrity glamour, youthful party culture, an exciting anything-goes scene, high-end shopping, and sophisticated dining, as well as breathtaking beaches.

10 Places Where Locals Eat in mykonoes

Mykonoes restaurants are known for serving some of the most exquisite and sophisticated cuisine in the Aegean. It’s easy to get sucked into the glamour and grandeur of international restaurants while on the island. But the truth is that there are plenty of local restaurants which offer high-quality food at a fraction of the cost.

You’re planning to visit ‘The Island of the Winds,’ and you want to enjoy authentic Cycladic cuisine as a local. Read on to find out what mykonoes offer – from traditional kafeneia (Greek cafes) to beach shacks.

1. To Kafeneio tou Bakoya

From Kafeneio to Bakoya, a small old-fashioned Greek kafeneio (cafe) is where locals meet to eat and to share the news. It’s been located opposite Gialos’ fish market since the late 70s. The family-owned business is Mrs. Vaso, who cooks the food, and the aunties and uncles of the family clean up.

You can see local fishermen selling fresh catch along the waterfront. Enjoy delicious local sausages and sea urchins as you get a natural feel for mykonoes.

2. Bakalo

Bakalo’s food is just as authentic as its exterior. It is a traditional Mykonian home with arched doors and an 18th-century well in the courtyard. This restaurant is located in Lakka and offers a double-duty map of the island’s culinary scene.

It features the finest locally sourced ingredients mykonoes can offer. Bakalo offers hearty Cycladic meals like pancetta with Santorini Fava, beef with Mavrodafni Sauce, and beef with thyme, as well as amberjack skewers. You will also find Cycladic ingredients such as pasteli (sesame seed candy), and fig jam on the dessert menu.

3. Peskesi, Crete

Peskesi is located in Heraklion, Crete. It offers Cretan food delicacies and a rustic chic ambiance. This gem is a true Greek farm-to-table experience, with its core principles tied to sustainable agriculture and gastronomy.

This restaurant is well-known for its delicious dishes, including Dakos, Cretan wines, cheesecakes, baklava, and slow-cooked goat. You should reserve your table in advance.

4. Rizes

Rizes is a farm-to-fork paradise, hidden away in the beautiful mykonoes countryside. The restaurant is surrounded by small farmhouses, chicken coops, and stables. It has a large square that resembles a rural village. A light breeze blows under the pergola and brings freshness along with the aroma of freshly cut wheat to delight your senses. Panagiota, Nikos, and the other owners are both from the island. They moved to Ano Meria a few miles away from the busy coast three years back.

Nikos created the farm on Barba (“Grandfather”) Giannis’ best piece of land in order to offer a completely different mykonoes experience. It is a place to share and eat, learn sourdough bread, and listen to traditional music until late at night. Every last bit of the bread, from the stuffed zucchini blossoms to the braised lamb and thyme-seasoned sausages, is made from hand-picked biological veggies from the garden.

5. Nero Nero

There is no more romantic experience than a dinner for two at a single-table restaurant overlooking the ocean. Nero Nero is located on Ornos bay. Diners can arrive by private boat or the candlelit flight of steps that leads to the wooden deck. The waiter will provide the menu when patrons are seated under the somewhat baroque Barnum.

This table is a must-book, with everything from lobster to scallops and foie gras to turbot and wagyu beef. It’s perfectly normal to feel like a celebrity or a footballer. Just listen to the names of those who have eaten here in recent years. As if from a fairytale, suddenly the moon rises opposite the table as the pudding is being served. We wonder if the waiter really is a magician. The only thing that worries us is the fact that the boat (or more accurately, the car) hasn’t turned into a pumpkin after the last glass of Champagne.

6. Maereio

Maereio, a small but authentic Mykonian Taverna, has been located in Chora’s heart for nearly twenty years. The restaurant is owned by Dimitris Monoyios and Isidoros Monoyios, twin brothers. It is open all year and proudly is “the first to open ” and “the last to close”. The brothers won’t tell you which dish they love, but they will tell you that Asemina’s meatballs are their favorite. They also like Maereio’s local sausage, feta, and vegetables. This menu is a delicious mostra that reflects the Cycladic simplicity, authenticity, and essence. As patrons relax in the casual atmosphere of barefoot hospitality, it is easy to empathize with them as they sit at the bar and enjoy a glass or two of the house wine. The taverna is always full because there are no secrets on mykonoes. It’s okay to laugh at it, but it is worth it.

7. Kiki’s Taverna

Visitors and local foodies travel to the north coast to enjoy this island’s legendary cuisine. This small family-run restaurant opens at 1 pm and overlooks a tiny cove. The line starts an hour in advance, and diners begin to wait for their turn. After that, they are allowed to eat enormous portions of grilled pork chops and swordfish, along with baked potatoes and imaginative salads.

8. Nikolas Taverna

This traditional taverna is located on the south coast, just a short walk from Platys Gilialos. It has been owned and operated by the same family for the past three generations. This is also a great place to enjoy a hearty, solid meal without the hustle and bustle of the rest of the island. Nikolas, the owner of the restaurant, captures a lot of the fish and most of his meat dishes are made with meats from his family farm.

9. Koursaros restaurant

Mykonoes Town restaurant specializes in sushi and seafood. Although the prices are high, the elegant spot is worth it for its romantic atmosphere, fresh ingredients, and artistic presentation. The bar offers innovative cocktails to the beat of a nightly DJ. Low and non-alcoholic drinks are also available.

10. Koukoumi

This excellent, plant-based restaurant is available at mykonoes first all-vegan hotel. It features a fine dining menu that draws heavily from Japanese and Mediterranean influences.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MYKONOES

The peak season is June to August. You can expect high temperatures and large crowds. You can expect decent weather and fewer crowds in May and September. Despite the extreme weather, it is still a great time of year to visit mykonoes. Although it will be cold enough to swim on the beaches, it is worth it for those who prefer to avoid crowds. Expect chilly and sometimes rainy weather from November to March. There will be fewer hotels and restaurants open.

MYKONOES: HOW MUCH TIME SHOULD IT TAKE?

You will have enough time to explore mykonoes town, spend time on the beach, or take a day trip to Delos in one day. You can extend your stay to include beach hopping and exploring the island beyond mykonoes.

One day was enough for us. Knowing now that I am a better person than I was then, I would rather spend our afternoon at Delos than drive up to the lighthouse and beach hopping. But, Kara didn’t want us to take her on another boat.

WHERE TO EAT

Unfortunately, many of the restaurants on my list are still closed during winter. D’Angelo mykonoes is the best place for Italian cuisine, and it’s right in mykonoes. Raya Restaurant, a Mediterranean seafood restaurant, was our favorite place to eat dinner. Another great restaurant in mykonoes is Captain’s and M-Eating. Caesar’s.

Blue Myth Restaurant, Avli Tou Thodori have been highly rated restaurants in Platys Gilialos, a small beachfront village on the southern side of the island.

Make your reservations for dinner in advance if you are planning to visit mykonoes during busy summer months.

WHERE TO STAY

LUXURY Myconian Korali Relais & Chateaux. This 5-star hotel is just outside mykonoes. Some rooms have a private plunge pool or terraces that overlook mykonoes. The Era Junior Suite also has a private pool for those who want to spend a lot.

UPSCALE Boho Suites. This was where we stayed. The rooms are spacious and include a living space and a kitchenette. A private hot tub and another seating area can be found on the terrace. The terraces of this property don’t offer many views. Suites #1 and #2 are located on the lowest levels. Although we didn’t have a view, we loved the hot tub and access to the hot tub. It takes only 5 minutes to walk from Boho Suites to the Old Harbour.

Final Thoughts

Mykonoes is unique in its personality and character. No two mykonoes visits are ever the same. It is also a constantly changing kaleidoscope full of possibilities, dreams, expectations, and possibilities. You’ll leave the island with many stories that will last a lifetime if you approach it with an open mind. You don’t have the obligation to share your stories, but you can if you choose not to. As the saying goes, “What happens in mykonoes stays here.”
